Cheap Flight Advice
Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at 08:15AM
I recently sent out an email asking about the best way to get cheap airline tickets. We are going to Boston in October and are trying to get the best deal. Here's what folks have responded with thus far:"I have always found that going right to the airline's site gets a better price then the travel sites. Try southwest and jet blue. also air tran."
"There is one called 1800 cheap seats and kayak.com is good. Also, i've never done it, but you can bid on priceline. The only problem is you have to give your card info up front- and i believe they automatically charge your card once they locate the flight with your criteria. Not 100% sure on that though."
"One of the girls here in the lab was trying to find a reasonable price on a flight to Chicago and could not find one for less than $350. I believe we have the friggin' gas prices to blame for all of this :P Sucks!!!!"
"If you don't care about multiple stops, you can do www.cheaptickets.com. But it'll take a lot longer."
"remember i dont know the area. but if you can leave from louisville-southwest goes to two " Boston area" airports. dont know if these are close enough. also didnt know your days to come and go. but some days are about $111.00 each way plus tax and fees- depends on time and date."
"Have you signed up at Travelocity? They'll send you email about drops in prices on your selected city. You can bid at Priceline. I always use to look at the airlines after midnight on Monday or Tuesday, had seen a news broadcast that those are the times that specials are posted. But then again I booked my October ticket to Tulsa on a Friday night. Everything I had been seeing was about $500. Looked at expedia on Friday evening and saw a good deal on Northwest. Went to their site and booked my tickets for $377 with fees and taxes. Has everyone done away with their frequent flier miles? If not, I used mine on Delta last year to Northwest Arkansas at Thanksgiving. Round trip cost about $35."
I actually tried to use my Delta SkyMiles to book the flight but found that they had expired in January 2008. Guess I should have read the literature that was sent to me!!

I have now been watching flights pretty much daily. It seems that Monday and Tuesday are the best days to shop for flights. A friend tells me that if you shop at midnight on either day, you are guaranteed the lowest price. I am usually out by 10 pm so I don't think I will be getting up to save a few pennies...but you never know. Expedia seems to have the best prices thus far and I have used every suggestion I've received. It seems that if you are willing to fly out of Louisville, the flights are often cheaper...but at the same time, you have the expense of gas driving to and from Louisville as well as the parking fees. Thus, by the time you add all of those additional costs up, you really aren't saving yourself anything. I say convenience is worth the extra dollars.

We finally got our flights to Boston! After much waiting and looking for trends, it was time that ended up being the best strategy. The most expensive the flights were over the past month were $483. Today, I got the same exact flight for $284 per ticket. The grand total was $666 (how appropriate given the tat on hubby's shoulder). I found that Travelocity had the best deals and the most selection. Total registration to pay for the tickets AND register them under our frequent flyer number was around 10 minutes. Can't wait to tell all of you about the trip! Talk to you again in October!!
