Fountain of Fish Oil Youth
Tuesday, June 24, 2008 at 03:07PM Fish oil contains two long-chain essential fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which are those famous omega-3 fats. The benefit of deriving these essential fats from fish oil capsules is that mercury and organic toxins are extracted. If you ate fish high in omega-3 fats, you would be limited in the recommended weekly amount due to mercury levels. Nuts and oils contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which has a less pronounced effect on the body. Thus, the benefits of fish oil may outweigh those of walnuts, flaxseed, and olive oil!
The benefits that I’ve read about thus far include the following:
- EPA, or eicosapentaenoic acid, has an effect on the body’s inflammatory response. Omega 3 fatty acids have a known effect on lowering cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and blood pressure. At the same time, they are supposed to increase your HDL, or good cholesterol.
- Clotting, as you know, can cause heart attack and stroke. Research has shown that omega 3 fatty acids break up clots.
- Improved brain function can result from ingestion of DHA as it is a component of cell membranes in the central nervous system.
- Abnormal cell proliferation inhibition, which means the body will not reproduce abnormal cells that cause cancer.
The American Heart Association (AHA) has recommended that patients with documented coronary artery disease consume 1 gram of EPA + DHA every day, preferably from fatty fish or fish oil (if recommended by your physician). If it comes from the AHA, you can pretty much be sure it's been studied from every angle.
At any rate, I will be certain to keep you apprised as I set on my personal study of fish oil benefits. I just hope all this healthiness isn't counteracted by all of the wine I may be drinking in the coming weeks with my in-laws.

Tomorrow it will be one week since I started taking 2400 mg of fish oil per day. After reading about the benefits on my blog, my husband was intrigued. He started taking it as well. Do I feel any different? Not really. Does my skin look healthy and cleared up? It did before. Am I going to stop taking it? No way! My girlfriend who got me on this bandwagon said it took about six months for her to notice any physical difference in her parents. Just imagine what it did for their insides! I'll keep on letting you know as I think about it. Perhaps in a month or two, someone will tell ME that MY skin is glowing! And the first peeps I'll tell are you guys!!

It has now been a couple of weeks since I started my fish oil mission. I am taking 1200 mg twice a day and am still on the same bottle. I think I mentioned that my husband has also started taking it—and since my father-in-law is visiting, he has jumped on the bandwagon as well. He is 76-years-old and has been taking cod liver oil for most of his life. If the state of his health is a reflection of fish oil intake, we could all use the benefits! Two years ago, he went to Natural Bridge with Robert and hiked up to the top of the Bridge then tackled yet another trail in the Red River Gorge...all at the young age of 74.
Since my father-in-law has been taking the oil with us, he took it upon himself to buy another bottle. This time the bottle states that it not only has Omega-3 but also Omega-6. I looked at the ingredients and noted that mackerel has been added in this version. I am happy about that because after I started taking the fish oil, I compared ingredients online between different brands. Some had salmon and mackerel in them and some did not.
I'm convinced that my skin looks better but my nurse friend tells me it will take a lot longer than two weeks to see effects. Regardless, I prevail.
I do feel some slight reflux with the pills but am hoping this subsides. It's not enough to be annoying, though. My husband said he has no problems with this. At any rate, check back in a couple of weeks for another update!

It's been well over a month now since we started taking fish oil. Honestly, I haven't noticed a difference. I have, however, just yesterday increased my dose to the recommended daily amount. My friend who inspired me to start taking the oil told me it took about six months for her parents to notice any outward benefits. Five months to go! I'll keep you posted...keep watching this spot!

Oh! I am very interested to see how this does for you. Always looking for ways to improve my hair, nails and complexion!
EPA and DHA are also good for arthritis (being anti-inflammatory and all). I have been taking 2g/d for a while now and no longer need to take 4 Aleve/d as before...I take none! 1g/d has also shown a 45% reduction in sudden death in post MI pts at 90 days. N-3 are being used/tested in everything from ADHD to constipation.
10 years younger. I am SO THERE. My sister mentioned this when we were in Florida last week and I really need to pick some up.
